The « Journée Internationale de la Francophonie » was created in 1988 and is celebrated every year on March 20th. The French language can be considered endangered in North America and in some parts of Europe, particularly given the predominance of English. However, it is developing significantly in Africa. There are more than 369 million French speakers in the world. It is for this occasion that CartoVista has decided to create a map of the Francophonie that will be 100% in French. This is a good opportunity to discover amazing statistics while improving (or using) your French.
French speakers in the world
This theme studies the number of French speakers in the world thanks to statistics provided by the International Organization of the Francophonie. You will find the percentage of the French-speaking population represented by the blue colour on the map and the number of French speakers in thousands (with red concentric circles).
L’Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie (OIF)
This section focuses on the internal structure of the OIF, created in 1970. You will find a theme that represents all the members of the organization with their adhesion dates. You will see for example that there are countries that are members, but also some that are “associated” and others that are considered as “observers”. Finally, you will discover thanks to our icons the different offices of the OIF, the former Secretaries-General of the organization (and the current one who is Louise Mushikiwabo – Rwanda) as well as the different summits that have taken place recently.
