You can update any layer or data table already uploaded to the CartoVista platform by dragging and dropping a new file which will replace the existing dataset.
Navigate to your layer or data table #
- Click on “Data” to navigate to the Data Gallery. Search for your dataset using the search bar, or navigate in the gallery to find your dataset.
- Click on the name of the dataset (or the icon) to open the data detailed panel. If you are using the table view of Data Gallery, click your dataset’s row.
- Click on the “…” icon to open the Actions menu.
- Select “Update”
Drag and drop your file #
The pop-up window allows you to drag and drop your new file. You can also click “Browse files” to select your new file from your File Explorer.
- The new file should contain all the existing columns of the existing dataset. Column names in the new file should be identical to the column identifiers of the existing dataset. Column identifiers are inherited from the original file the dataset was created from.
- The new file can contain new columns that can be added during the update
- If some columns are missing in the new file, the update will fail and you will be informed of the missing columns.
Once your new file has been uploaded, the next pop-up window allows you to select any new columns to add. Use the checkbox to add new columns, and click “Next”.
If your new file is missing some of the existing columns, this message will inform you of the columns that need to be added to your new file:
Keep in mind that it could also be a name mismatch, in which case you can just rename your columns to match the existing column identifiers.
Result #
The notification informs you of the success of the update.
Please note that updating a dataset will have the following consequences:
- the new imported file completely overwrites the existing layer.
- any map which uses this dataset will now display the updated version.
- if the dataset uses the Live Data Update, the maps will display a notification informing the currently active users of the data update.
- if the dataset is linked to another layer, the join will be performed again. If the identifiers no longer match, the maps using this layer will display N/A values for the linked columns.
- if the dataset is imported from address geocoding, the geocoding will be performed again. This will consume Monthly Geocoding Transactions (the number of transactions is the number of rows in the new file).
