The Chart panel displays dynamic charts for every thematic analysis. You can also use it to add custom charts to your slide. Custom charts are created from a map layer.
Dynamic thematic analysis charts #
A chart will be created in the Chart panel for every thematic analysis you create.
For numeric thematic analysis, a bar chart will be created (one bar for each feature):
For string thematic analysis, a pie chart will be created (one pie-chart-area for each string value, with a size proportional to the number of features):
The chart is dynamically linked to the legend and the map. You can place your cursor on a bar of the bar chart to highlight the features in the map and the legend. By default, when you select features, the chart will be regenerated to show the selected features only:
Dynamic charts have parameters. Click on the settings gear to change the parameters:
- Link to the selection: enable this to regenerate the chart when selecting features. Enabled by default.
- Optimize View (bar charts only): enable this to stack the min and max values to the same height to optimize the chart rendering when dealing with extreme min or max values.
- Show labels: show the labels of the features or string values:
Adding new charts #
Chart areas #
The Chart Panel can store and display multiple charts. Use the New Chart Area button to create a new area for your new chart. Charts will be displayed one after the other in the chart panel:
You can click on the list of available charts in the chart top bar to change the chart displayed in the chart area:
You can also click to remove a chart area (when you have more than one). This will not delete the chart displayed in this chart area. The chart will still be stored in the map, and available in the list of charts as shown above).
Create a custom charts #
To create a custom chart, click on the Plus icon in a chart area:
Here are the chart creation steps:
- Enter the title of your chart
- Select the layer to be used to create the chart
- Select the column(s) to be used to create the chart: you can select multiple numeric columns, or a single string column.
- Select the color(s) to be used in the chart. If you have selected multiple numeric columns, you can choose the color for each column.
- Choose the chart type (see the table below)
- Choose the column to use to sort the features in the chart.
- Choose the chart options:
- Aggregate: aggregate all the values using the column aggregation method (sum, min, max, mean, etc.). Enabled and forced for pie charts.
- Stack (only for bar charts with more than one column selected): stack the bars of the different columns in the bar chart.
- Link to the selection: enable this to regenerate the chart when selecting features. Enabled by default.
- Optimize View (bar charts only): enable this to stack the min and max values to the same height to optimize the chart rendering when dealing with extreme min or max values.
- Show labels: show the labels of the features or string values.
Chart Type | Image |
Pie chart: this is the only chart type available for string columns. The aggregation is necessarily enabled for this type of chart. When creating a pie chart with numeric columns, select at least two columns to compare the aggregated values. | Pie chart for a string column Pie chart for two numeric columns |
Column chart: this is the default chart for numeric columns. Not available for string columns. You can create a column chart for multiple numeric columns. One bar is created for each feature, except when the aggregated parameter is enabled (in which case you will get a single bar). You can also stack the bar if you create a column chart using multiple columns.
Line chart: this chart is available for numeric columns only. You can create a line chart for multiple numeric columns, and you will get one line for each column. The line is created by connecting the dots of the feature values.
Area chart: this chart is available for numeric columns only. You can create an area chart for multiple numeric columns, and you will get one area for each column. The area is created by connecting the dots of the feature values, and filling the area under the line.
Scatter chart: this chart is for comparing two numeric columns, and is only available when two numeric columns are selected. The first column selected will be the Y axis, and the second column selected will be the X axis. You can also show the trend line of the point chart. |
Click “Ok” to validate the chart creation. The custom chart will now be available in the list of available charts.
